Bioprocess economics

Bioprocess Economics & COGS Modeling

We build bottom-up manufacturing cost analyses that show what it takes to make a product, what is driving the cost, and which variables have the greatest impact on the result. Assumptions, methodology, and key sensitivities are documented so the analysis can be understood, challenged, and used in decision-making.

What it is

A cost-of-goods analysis built from the process itself. We model manufacturing unit operation by unit operation, with raw materials, consumables, labor, equipment, facility, and QC captured separately so the major cost drivers are visible.

Where client data are incomplete, we use expert benchmarks and clearly identify the assumptions behind the analysis. Sensitivity and scenario analyses show which variables matter most and where changes in process design, scale, location, or operating strategy can materially change the economics.

When you need it

Bioprocess economics is most useful when a manufacturing decision has financial consequences that are difficult to see from process data alone. We support analyses such as build versus buy decisions, equipment train changes, scale-up strategies, on-shoring and geographic comparisons, commercial cost forecasting, and evaluation of alternative manufacturing approaches.

The analysis can also support investment, acquisition, portfolio, and funding decisions by showing how manufacturing assumptions affect the long-term economics of a product or program.

What we model

We develop manufacturing cost analyses across a range of life science products and platforms, including:

  • Vaccines
  • Monoclonal antibodies and other biologics
  • Cell and gene therapy processes
  • Diagnostics
  • Medical devices
  • Drug substance and drug product manufacturing
  • Emerging or novel manufacturing platforms

Deliverables typically include a presentation of results, methodology, assumptions, major cost drivers, and scenario comparisons. Where appropriate, we can also provide an Excel-based scenario tool that allows selected assumptions to be changed and compared.
